As the summer winds down and we transition into the fall, it's a great time to reflect on our exercise programs and find ways to bring more consistency into our lives. Despite teaching movement for 20 years, I sometimes still struggle to make exercise a priority. There are times when I'm in a groove, training consistently and feeling great. Then, life throws a curveball, and I find myself off track, making excuses, and prioritizing work or taking care of others before myself. Can you relate?
I've allowed the notion that I don’t have enough time for a full hour-long workout to derail me. I often think if it's not a perfect workout—long enough, hard enough, or just right—I might as well skip it. I also encourage you to look at any recurring patterns you have regarding your exercise commitments.
Today, I’ll break down some strategies to help build more consistency (advice I also intend to follow.) As we explore ways to create a more consistent exercise routine this fall, let's approach it with understanding, compassion, and an open heart. At Coreworks, we believe in supporting each other on our wellness journeys, no matter where you’re starting from or what your past experiences have been. You are welcome here with open arms, and together, we can find the strength to stay consistent and achieve our goals.
The Challenge of Consistency
Maintaining a consistent exercise routine is a challenge many of us face. Life is full of unexpected changes, stress, and responsibilities that can easily throw us off track. It’s important to acknowledge that these interruptions are a natural part of life and that it's okay to have ups and downs. What matters most is how we respond and get back on track.
For many, the challenge of consistency can stem from various factors. The demands of work, family, and social obligations often take priority, leaving little time for self-care. Stress and fatigue can sap our motivation, making it difficult to lace up our sneakers or roll out the mat.
Sometimes, past experiences with exercise—whether it's a lack of confidence, previous injuries, or simply not finding the right fit—can also play a role in our reluctance to stick with a routine. Lack of commitment or motivation can even have a deeper, subconscious root cause related to limiting beliefs.
I've personally experienced plenty of days when I know I should be moving, but I find myself prioritizing other tasks or simply feeling too overwhelmed to start. It's during these times that I remind myself, and I encourage you to do the same, that every small step counts. Even if it’s just a few minutes of movement, it can make a significant difference.
Finding Motivation
Finding the motivation to stay consistent with exercise often begins with building trust in yourself and your journey. It’s about recognizing that you are worthy of the time and effort it takes to prioritize your health and well-being. At Coreworks, we aim to cultivate an environment where you feel supported and empowered to take those steps.
Here are some strategies to help you build trust and find the motivation to stay consistent:
- Set Realistic Goals: It’s important to set achievable goals. As you meet your goals, your confidence will grow, and you can gradually increase the intensity and frequency of your workouts.
- Start Small and Build Gradually: Begin with short, manageable workouts that fit easily into your schedule. Even 10-15 minutes of movement can make a difference. As you become more comfortable, gradually increase the duration and intensity of your workouts.
- Celebrate Small Victories: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Each step forward is a victory and should be recognized. This could be as simple as noting how you feel after a workout or treating yourself to something special after reaching a milestone.
- Create a Routine That Fits YOUR Life: Find a routine that fits seamlessly into your daily life. This might mean scheduling workouts at a time when you’re least likely to be interrupted or choosing classes that you genuinely enjoy. It’s about finding what works best for you, not anyone else. Do your best to let go of comparisons of what others are doing.
- Schedule Your Workouts: Treat your exercise time like any other important appointment. Schedule it in your calendar and stick to it. Consistency comes from making exercise a non-negotiable part of your day.
- Mix It Up: Variety can keep your routine exciting and prevent boredom. Try different types of classes, such as mat Pilates, Reformer sessions, or our new Myofascial Release & Mobility class. Experimenting with different workouts can keep you engaged and motivated.
- Seek Support from the Community: Surround yourself with a supportive community. At Coreworks, our instructors and fellow members are here to motivate and encourage you. Joining group classes can provide a sense of camaraderie and accountability, making it easier to stay committed.
- Find an Accountability Partner: Having a workout buddy can make a big difference. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or fellow Coreworks member, having someone to share your journey with can provide motivation and support.
- Be Kind to Yourself: Remember that it’s okay to have off days. What’s important is how you bounce back. Approach each day with compassion for yourself and recognize that consistency is a journey, not a destination.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels and adjust your routine accordingly. Some days, you might feel energized and ready for a challenging workout, while other days, a gentle stretch or restorative session might be more appropriate. Honor what your body needs.
By incorporating these strategies, you can build the trust in yourself and motivation needed to maintain a consistent exercise routine. Remember, the goal is to find a routine that works for you and fits into your life. At Coreworks, we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way. Our community is here to lift you up, cheer you on, and help you find the joy in movement.
